A New Jersey woman saved her own life after her leg was severed in a train accident – while other passengers ignored her screams for help.

Lisa Fitzgerald, 30, was left clinging on to a platform wall for her life after she was struck by a New Jersey Transit train at Morristown train station on May 5.

Fitzgerald had been running to catch the train to New York City when she tripped and fell through the gap onto the tracks as a the train pulled into the station.

Her leg was ‘immediately’ cut off as she was hit by the last few cars of the train, while people at the station ignored her screams for help.

Speaking on Fox News, Fitzgerald recalled: ‘It was kind of a crazy time. I was running to catch the train and I tripped and slipped through the gap.’

She continued: ‘My leg was cut off immediately, I was spun around from that and I landed on my stomach facing backwards.

‘I saw the next set of wheels of the train rolling at me, so I rolled out of the way and hugged myself against the platform wall.

‘I did a little check, I saw that my leg was gone. I thought that maybe my foot was broken, I had to kick my shoe off.

‘Besides that it really was just bumps and bruises, I started yelling for help for the people waiting for the train.

‘After a few minutes nobody came to help, I figured I have to find someway off of these tracks.’

Using all her strength, Fitzgerald managed to pull herself up onto the edge of the platform and throw herself to safety.

She continued ‘I kept screaming for help and a ticket collector came over and I got his attention.

‘He went out, I kept screaming, he found a police officer that came to help that called for back up and I went to hospital from there.’

She was rushed to hospital and treated, but her leg could not be reattached. A GoFundMe set up by her sister has since raised over $103,000.

She added: ‘Nobody called 911 I found out the next day. I have a home nurse and home physical therapy I am doing. I’m not completely on my own yet.’

‘I’ve been doing pretty well, the whole time I have been smiling trying to work through everything.’

Fitzgerald, who is one of eight siblings, has been dubbed the ‘Miracle of Morristown’ for surviving the accident which happened just two weeks before her 30th birthday.

Her stepmom Stacie Weil-Fitzgerald told Fox: ‘We decorated the hospital and we had a big celebration for her.

‘And she is in such good spirits. With her GoFundMe, people have just been so supportive and so amazing. That really makes us feel good.

‘She’s unbelievable. She has not stopped smiling.’
