ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos was captured on video in the streets of New York telling a person that he doesn’t believe that President Joe Biden can serve another four years.

The video posted earlier today on TMZ, and showed him responding to a question from a person with a camera, asking him whether he thought Biden should step down. “I don’t think he can serve four more years,” Stephanopoulos said.

The comment comes after Stephanopoulos’ interview with Biden, which the network aired as a primetime special last week. The special drew 8.5 million viewers.

Through a spokesperson, Stephanopoulos said that “earlier today I responded to a question from a passerby. I shouldn’t have.” Puck first reported on his comment, which is a bit unusual for a broadcast anchor but not uncommon for a cable news host, as figures like Joe Scarborough have weighed in on the president’s prospects.

During the interview, Biden insisted that he was staying in the race, and would only step aside if the “lord almighty” told him to. He also said that his poor debate performance was due to the fact that he had a cold and still was impacted by a heavy travel schedule.

The debate has triggered a round of calls for Biden to step aside, coming from some Democratic lawmakers and a number of donors, including Rob Reiner, Stephen King and Reed Hastings. But Biden told Morning Joe on Monday that those concerns are coming from party elites while citing the crowd size of recent rallies. “They’re big names, but I don’t care what those big names think. They were wrong in 2020. They were wrong in 2022 about the red wave. They were wrong in 2024,” Biden said.
